A Thanksgiving Kiss - Right Joe?

How do you turn adults into children in the blink of an eye? Introduce them to Punjab. After a visit to a circa 1778 (original structure) 2-story log house, the innkeeper at Gillum House Bed & Breakfast took this family who came for Thanksgiving to visit Punjab.

B & Bs For Vets - A Thank You

In 2008, the Gillum House Bed & Breakfast in Shinnston, West Virginia sent out a press release to the local area newspapers that all rooms were available FREE OF CHARGE to anyone with a valid military ID on November 10 as a Thank you for your Service. This would cover Active Duty, Retired, National Guard, and Reserves. One young Navy family was visiting relatives in Fairmont and booked.
The Gillum House felt this would be a way to not only thank the military, but to also thank the truly “unsung” heroes – their partners who have to take care of everything while their partner/spouse is deployed or on a TDY assignment. November 10 was chosen so the military would be on-site for any Veterans Day activities.

Shinnston's Lincoln High NJROTC Color Guard

In 2009, nine other members of the West Virginia Bed & Breakfast Association joined in the effort making a minimum of one room available on November 10. Joe Stevens of the Media Center222 generously sent out Press Releases to get the word out so the military would know it was available. In 2010, it was decided to take it nationwide – and it went international! We also found a way to include proof of Service for those who served but did not retire (Korea, Viet Nam. Gulf Wars) – a Veterans Administration ID would also be accepted. Once again, Joe Stevens got the word out to the Veterans.
The innkeepers at the Thomas Shepherd Inn in Shepherdstown, West Virginia created a web site to list the participating inns so the military could find participating inns easily. By November 2010, 900 bed & breakfasts in the United States, 11 in Canada, 2 in Mexico, and 1 each in Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Paris, France, and Namibia in Africa were participating. In 2011, the program was turned over to The Better Way To Stay (Professional Association of Innkeepers International). In 2011, BBCanada launched the program for Remembrance Day.
Since November 11 is on a Sunday in 2012 and the Official Observance is Monday, November 12 so B & Bs For Vets will be observed on November 11, 2012. Many of the participating innkeepers are Veterans themselves and many inns offer military discounts year round. Reservations will be taken as any other reservation would - meaning all inn policies apply - and on arrival, showing ID resets the rate to FREE OF CHARGE for the room.
ABC News and Forbes have written articles to get the word out to Veterans in 2012.
Remember – Bed & Breakfasts ARE the Better Way To Stay!
