Winter Wonderland at The Maguire House

This has undoubtedly been one of the most beautiful winters at the Maguire House. The snow has been perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, which can be done right from our back door. We are also only 15 minutes from Wachusett Mountain and 30 minutes from Windblown Cross Country Ski Resort. Both are having banner years as well.

Valentine's Day in Shepherdstown, WV at the Thomas Shepherd Inn B&B

For Valentine's Day this year, the Thomas Shepherd Inn B&B will be offering couples of all vintages a chance to experience the best in independent movies the old-fashioned way - in a small, intimate theater (about 100 seats) at the restored and newly-rejuvenated Opera House. The concession stand features popcorn doused with real melted butter and a selection of wine and locally-brewed beers, along with the usual soda and snacks. Book a two-night stay at the Inn and receive complimentary passes to a show - and a delicious box of locally-made DeFluri's chocolates will be waiting in your room. We'll also provide you with comfy cushions for your trip to the movies - the most-experienced Opera House patrons know to grab a cushion for the lightly-padded vintage theater seats upon their arrival but you will bring your own from the Inn! This package will be available between February 11 and February 21.

Raspberry-Chocolate Clouds

Just in time for Valentine's Day! This recipe goes much faster than I thought it would, especially if you buy the chocolate cups premade.

Steam engine enthusiasts gushing

The Chesapeake and Ohio 614 has rolled in at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

Few locomotives in this world could make the Norfolk and Western 1218 take a back seat at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

The Chesapeake and Ohio 614 is one of them.

The 434-ton steam locomotive, which has been called the last commercially manufactured mainline passenger steam engine made in America, arrived in Roanoke on Thursday for a three-month stay. It will be officially unveiled Feb. 12 as part of a two-locomotive exhibit alongside the museum's other prized steam behemoth, the streamlined N&W 611.

The exhibit, titled "Thoroughbreds of Steam," will also include a display inside the museum with photographs and historical information, museum officials said. They are considering keeping the 614 under wraps until then -- although that's a lot of wrapping. As of Friday, the gargantuan 614 was fully visible beside the 611 under the museum's Claytor Pavilion.

BnB's For Vets - and its Aftermath

On November 10, 2009 bed & breakfasts who were members of the West Virginia Association of Bed & Breakfasts joined together to give free rooms to veterans or active duty military in honor of Veterans Day on November 11 so their guests would be on-site for any activities/parades taking place on the 11th. In January 2010 the idea to take the program nationwide was born.

Flag flown during Operation New Dawn in Iraq
The Professional Association of Innkeepers International mentioned it in their monthly newsletter - and it was off and running! First to join in with West Virginia was the Cody County Bed & Breakfast Association in Wyoming.

Kathleen Panek of Gillum House Bed and Breakfast in Shinnston WV spearheaded this effort and the innkeepers of the Thomas Shepherd Inn in Shepherdsrown, WV created a web site and the program grew, and grew, and GREW.

Today is the day!

“Start living now. Stop saving the good china for that special occasion. Stop withholding your love until that special person materializes. Every day you are alive is a special occasion. Every minute, every breath, is a gift from God.” – Mary Manin Morrissey

If you are saving it for a special occasion, today is that special occasion!

As innkeepers we often overhear guests whisper "Why don't we ever use our good china?" or "We should use real napkins at home."

What are you waiting for?
Today is a special occasion, for every day, for every breath, what's more important than that?  Let's celebrate you right now.

Pets at The Inn

Many people do not realize that Innkeepers are families who have their own pets, often unseen to guest eyes.  We often share them on our websites for those who do not like animals, or are allergic, and those who love animals naturally gravitate toward them!  B&B pets are well behaved, well trained and lovable creatures, they are living in the owners quarters and you may come across them on the grounds of the inn.  Allow us to share a few beloved B&B Pets at B&B's you will innjoy.

Gluten-free macaroons

Folks who are following a gluten-free diet can still have some yummy desserts. I often make these cookies for my GF guests at the Thomas Shepherd Inn B&B in Shepherdstown, WV. All the guests seem to enjoy them - they disappear quickly! And they are so simple to make. From the Splendid Table's How to Eat Supper (a highly recommended cookbook):

2 large eggs, well beaten
1/2 cup sugar
Generous pinch of salt
1 teaspoon almond or vanilla extract
3 cups sweetened shredded coconut

A Great Day for Chocolate.

That's ANY day, so here is a chocolate-filled recipe to satisfy all your cravings! It has the basic 'craving' groups (instead of basic food groups!)- sugar, chocolate, carbs & butter. If it had a bit of saltiness, you'd never look back! More info on this bread pudding recipe at the White Cedar Inn blog.

Maine Lighthouses

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse- on Maine's State quarter
For more information on Pemaquid Point lighthouse, click here.

Maine is famous for the range of lighthouses that span the length of its 3500 miles of coastline. (Yup, we have more coastline than FL!) Coastline is measured into the bays and inlets, not just a rough 'point A to point B' measurement. It's in these bays and inlets that you'll find the best in lobster dining, boating, fishing, swimming and lodging!

Oregon Coast Covered Bridges

Covered Bridges Near the Oregon Coast

Did you know that Oregon has the largest collection of covered bridge in the West? There are 4 covered bridges south of Sandlake Country Inn in Lincoln County.

The covered-bridge-building tradition in Oregon dates from the 1850s. Out of necessity, pioneers built with the materials at hand. Douglas fir was abundant in western Oregon and well-suited to bridge construction. To increase their useful life, houses were constructed over the timber trusses to protect them from the damp western Oregon climate.
The heyday of covered bridge building in Oregon occurred between 1905 and 1925 when there were an estimated 450 covered bridges in the state. By 1977, this number had dwindled to 56. This focuses on covered bridges designed or built for vehicular traffic. Based on this criteria, Oregon currently has 50 covered bridges.
The closest covered bridge to us here at Sandlake Country Inn is the Drift Creek Bridge.
